Lamar University
dept.lamar.edu/cofac/art/fibers.htm

Our state of the art fibers studios include facilities for both weaving and surface design. The fibers program is well grounded in a study of the history of textiles and strongly encourages research into new fiber processes. Students also have the opportunity to take intensive workshops off campus in the summers, and to work with nationally recognized visiting artists at Lamar. The weaving studio is well equipped with four harness and multi-harness looms, and an excellent selection of yarns and equipment for weaving. Computer assisted design programs are used to help the students develop a personal approach to both complex woven structures and printed textiles. A well illuminated and spacious dye lab with textile print tables, fabric steamers, and safe dye mixing facilities provides all fibers students with the opportunity to learn to use a wide range of dyes and after processes. The use of contemporary and experimental technologies developed for fibers is encouraged at all levels of the program. Fibers students are committed to a program of public exhibitions at Texas galleries and museums. Through these exhibitions, students have made initial gallery contacts and sales and have had artworks published, encouraging them to begin their professional careers. Undergraduate students can pursue fibers study at Lamar through the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in Studio Art and a concentration in Fibers. Graduate students can pursue fibers study through the Masters of Visual Art degree with an emphasis in Studio Art.

Oregon College of Art and Craft
www.ocac.edu

The fibers department provides a comprehensive overview of creating and manipulating fabric. Studies fall into three broad areas: weaving, surface design and off-loom/mixed media. Weaving is taught on vertical tapestry and multi-harness floor looms. Surface design courses focus on pattern and color through printed fabric with dyes and resists using blocks, silk-screens and shibori. Off-loom/mixed media work includes instruction in felt making, embroidery and process oriented work with unconventional materials. OCAC offers both degree and non-degree programs

UNT offers both the MFA and BFA degrees in Fibers. The mission of the fibers area is to promote excellence through comprehensive educational programming providing a strong fundamental base that includes cross cultural, historical, and contemporary issues in fiber arts. The fibers area fosters critical thinking by offering a diverse curriculum that includes surface design, weaving, and alternative processes courses that provide students the opportunity to work in two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and installation formats. Fibers is the one area where majors are not restricted to one material, process, or technique. The endless possibilities have resulted in innovative and intriguing, conceptually based artwork. Students are introduced to: Large format digital printing with fiber reactive dyes, screen printing (photographic, cut stencils, drawing fluid and screen filler, polychromatic), cyanotype, silk painting, basketry (coiling, twining, plaiting), embroidery (hand and machine), stamping, marbling, heat transfer, dyeing, chemical and mechanical resists, beading, weaving (Jacquard, AVL compu-dobby loom, 34 floor looms with 4-16 harneses), knitting (computerized and hand), crochet, and felting.
